PROGRAMME: HOME SUPPORT WORKER (HSW) & PERSONAL SUPPORT WORKER (PSW)

 COURSE DURATION: 16 weeks

 

COURSE OBJECTIVE: The program is intended to prepare and build up student’s confidence in supportive care for people with medical challenges related to aging, physical and mental clients while encouraging independence in their daily activities. This is an integral part of human capital management by the Chartered Institute of Strategic Human Capital Managers of Canada.

 

LEARNING OUTCOME:

1)To be able to take responsibility and have knowledge of the boundaries between his/her role as a Home Support Worker (HSW) or Personal Support Worker  (PSW) and the client, other members of the family, other colleagues and the service team. 

 

2) Establish and maintain healthy relationships with clients and their families.

 

3) Maintain adequate communication skills, set professional boundaries and maintain confidentiality.

 

4) Promote and maintain a safe and comfortable environment for clients, their families, themselves and others including implementing infection prevention and control measures.

 

5) Be able to perform basic emergency first aid procedure and safety requirements as needed.

 

6) Understand and integrate the use of artificial intelligence.

 

7) Allow students to develop passion for the job and the profession for job retention and growth of knowledge & skills

 

8) Lectures are to be delivered in modules with supportive lectures notes and practical demonstrations as applicable.

 

 

 

 

Week 1:     Module 1   

·        General introduction

·        Understanding the difference in HSW & PSW and works integration.

·        Overview of HSW role & responsibilities understanding complex healthcare needs.

·        Understanding client needs and care plans.

·        Basics of health and safety protocols.

·        Building relationships with clients.

·        Importance of confidentiality with client and boundaries.

·        Communication skills.

 

Week 2:    Module 2 

·        Medication Management

·        Reminders and assistance

·        Understanding medication requirements

·        Safety considerations

·        Daily living assistance

·        Techniques of meal preparation & nutrition

·        Light housekeeping skills & organisation

·        First aid & CPR

·        Fine safety, alert and evacuation procedures

·        Fall prevention & management

 

Week 3:       Module 3 

                   Personal Care and Hygiene

·        Bathing & Grooming

·        Toileting & incontinence care   

·        Dressing & undressing

·        Respecting client privacy and dignity

·        Building rapport with clients

·        Active listening & empathy

·        Addressing & managing client concerns

·        Skin integrity

 

Week 4:    Module 4

Nutrition basics

·             Meal planning & preparation

·             Special diet and feeding techniques

·             Addressing common hygiene related challenges.

                                   

Week 5:         Module 5

   Mobility & Physical Assistance

·        Techniques for safe lifting and transferring clients

·        Use of mobility aids and equipment

·        Enhancing clients mobility and preventing falls

·        Range of motion exercises.

 

 

      

Week 6:         Module 6 

Cognitive & Mental Health Issues

·         Understandings cognitive impairments

·         Communication strategies

·        Emotional support & validation

·        Collaboration with healthcare professionals

·        Reporting & documentation

·        Assisting with meal planning & preparation

·        Supporting clients with dieting restrictions or needs

·        Safe food handling & hygiene practices.

 

Week 7:        Module 7    

Chronic Conditions & Palliative care   

·        Understanding chronic conditions e.g Diabetes, Alzheimer 

·        Palliative  care principle

·        End of life care

·        Recognizing syns of emotional distress or mental health issues

 

Week 8:        Module 8

Safety & Emergency Procedures

·        Home Safety assessment

·        CPR emergency response planning

·        First aid training

·        Infection control practices

·        Safe lifting & transferring techniques.

 

 

Week 9:        Module 9    

Households Management 

·        Light housekeeping

·        Laundry and linen care

·        Meal planning and budgeting.

 

 

Week 10:     Module 10  

Working in the Field 

·        Professionalism and ethics

·        Time management & Organisation

·        Reporting & Documentation

 

 

Week 11:     Module 11

Practicum

·        Hands on experience in a clinical setting

·        Assessment & evaluation

·        Quizzes & Exams

·        Practical skills demonstrations & evaluation

 

 

Week 12:     Module 12

Growth & Development  

·        Assessing growth

·        Keeping medical appointments  

·        Assisting with medications

 

 

Week 13:     Module 13

Legal and Ethical Consideration 

·        Understanding client right & confidentiality

·        Documentation & reporting requirements

·        Managing Ethical Dilemmas in Homecare

General Revision
